Ruby Braff wasn’t terribly meddlesome in food . . . though one of his primary difference of regard was DELICIOUS. And it came into my mind in a initial few seconds of these performances by effort saxophonist David Lukacs, tenor saxophone; Henk Sprenger, guitar; Uli Glaszmann, fibre drum — available on Nov 13, 2011, in a Theatre De Meerpaal, Dronten, a Netherlands.
Here they make something definitely unclouded out of Victor Herbert’s INDIAN SUMMER:
And a collection of jazz standards commencement with a witty, twisty Fifties anthem, BERNIE’S TUNE, before relocating to a pellucid clarinet reading of YOU TURNED THE TABLES ON ME,and a bit of BESAME MUCHO (the Swing Era is back!), a hold of INDIAN SUMMER, a deplorable peek during SEPTEMBER SONG, a spot during CLARINET MARMALADE, and some FLYING HOME to get us there.
Every note’s beautifully in place, though nothing’s cold or over-intellectualized. This overhanging contingent reminds me severely of Lucky Thompson / Oscar Pettiford / Skeeter Best or — in this century — a nifty personification of Americans Chris Madsen, Andy Brown, Dan Elfland, Joe Policastro. we initial encountered David (through a sorcery of YouTube) as a member of a Menno Daams tiny band, and was now won over. we wish there are some-more videos of this group, and a CD, and a unison debate . . . universe stardom, cache over a dreams of covetousness . . . they merit it and more! (I’m ready!)
