MELBOURNE, Australia (AP)—Rafael Nadal has a new injury—a tendon problem
in his right knee that nearly prompted him to forfeit a first-round match at the
Australian Open on Monday that he went to win handily.

Roger Federer, defending champion Kim Clijsters and top-seeded Caroline
Wozniacki, also bothered by injuries coming into the tournament, all advanced to
the second round in more routine fashion and appeared as if they were over their
ailments.

That wasn’t the case with Nadal. Bothered by a left shoulder injury late
last year, Nadal had his right knee heavily taped during his 6-4, 6-1, 6-1 win
over Alex Kuznetsov.

“I was sitting on a chair in the hotel, I felt like a crack on the knee …
really strange,” Nadal said. “I stand up. I felt the knee a little bit
strange. I moved the leg like this two times to try to find the feeling. After
the second time, the knee stays with an unbelievable pain completely straight. I
have no movement on the knee.”

“I wasn’t 100 percent sure I would have a chance to play,” Nadal added.

The Spaniard decided to play after an MRI exam showed no major damage, but
he still had concerns going into the match.

“I started with a little bit of a scare at the beginning, and nervous
because I was really disappointed yesterday,” he said. “But after the first 10
games … I started to play with normal conditions.

“The best thing is I felt the knee very well. I really don’t understand why
happened everything, but I am really happy that today I was ready to play and I
played a fantastic match.”

Federer, who pulled out of a tournament in Doha two weeks ago with back
soreness, began the quest for his 17th Grand Slam title—and first since the
2010 Australian Open—with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 win over qualifier Alexander
Kudryavtsev.

It was Federer’s 60th win at the Australian Open, and he also has 60-plus
wins at Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

The third-seeded Federer took the first two sets and was up a break in the
third before the Russian rallied with a break of serve in the fifth game of the
final set. Federer, however, broke Kudryavtsev in the next game with a backhand
cross-court winner and sealed the match when the Russian hit a forehand wide.

“No problem, I am happy to be 100 percent fit,” Federer said after his
win.

Just as quickly, he batted away speculation about a possibly divisive issue
with Nadal.

Nadal was critical of Federer on Sunday for not speaking out publicly in
support of players who are pushing the ATP for changes in areas such as
tournament scheduling and prize money.

“Things are fine between us, you know. I have no hard feelings towards
him,” Federer said. “It’s been a difficult last few months in terms of
politics within the ATP.

Nadal has “mentioned many times how he gets a bit tired and frustrated
through the whole process, and I shared that with him. It’s normal. But for me,
obviously nothing changes in terms of our relationship. I’m completely cool and
relaxed about it.”

Defending women’s champion Clijsters opened with a 7-5, 6-1 win over
Portuguese qualifier Maria Joao Koehler, showing no signs of the hip spasms
which forced her to withdraw from a tuneup event in Brisbane 10 day ago.

Wozniacki, who injured her left wrist in a quarterfinal loss at the Sydney
International, showed no signs of discomfort while cruising past Australia’s
Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-1 in the last match of the evening on Rod Laver
Arena.

“I got a bit nervous about my wrist in Sydney, but I am happy I could play
full-out tonight,” Wozniacki said.

Li Na, who lost the Australian final to Clijsters last year, earned a 6-3,
6-1 win over Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan. In the first featured match of the
tournament, third-seeded Victoria Azarenka won 12 straight games to finish off
Heather Watson 6-1, 6-0 in 67 minutes on center court.

The Hisense Arena crowd was solidly behind Nadal, particularly the groups of
young women who screamed and whistled when he changed his shirt and yelled “We
love you Rafa” and “Vamos Rafa!” between games. He didn’t give them a chance
to cheer for long, needing only about 30 minutes each to win the final two sets.

Clijsters similarly had an easy time in the second half of her match,
breaking Koehler’s serve in the deciding game of the first set and reeling off
13 straight points to start the second.

She claimed later that the win wasn’t as easy as it looked.

“It was hard to really get a good rhythm out there,” Clijsters said. “I
did feel like I was seeing the ball probably not always as good as I would like
to.”

She said she’d dealt with the “emotions and stress” of her hip injury,
claiming she was lucky even to get a few warmup matches in Brisbane.

Li was a trailblazer for China last year, reaching a Grand Slam singles
final for the first time before losing to Clijsters at Melbourne Park. At the
next major, she won the French Open to become the first player from China to win
a Grand Slam singles title.

“I hope I can go one better this year,” Li said of her Australian Open
campaign. She had a confidence-boosting buildup that included match wins at the
Hopman Cup and Sydney.

Of the six women who can reach the top ranking, eighth-ranked Agnieszka
Radwanska has the biggest task, having to win the Australian title. She had a
battle on her hands just to make the second round, fending off American Bethanie
Mattek-Sands 6-7 (10), 6-4, 6-2 in a three-hour match on Show Court 2.

Other women advancing included No. 16-seeded Peng Shuai of China, No. 20
Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, No. 22 Julia Goerges, No. 26 Anabel Medina
Garrigues of Spain and Eleni Daniilidou of Greece beat 41-year-old Kimiko
Date-Krumm of Japan 6-3, 6-2.

No. 19 Flavia Pennetta, No. 23 Lucie Safarova and No. 28 Yanina Wickmayer
were among the first-round losers.

Most of the local attention Monday was on 19-year-old Bernard Tomic, who
rallied from two sets down to beat No. 22-seeded Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-7 (3),
6-4, 6-2, 7-5. A five-set win over the 2009 semifinalist will no doubt give
Tomic a confidence boost as he attempts to become the first Australian man since
1976 to win the national title.

“Today wasn’t fun, it was torture,” said Tomic, who reached the Wimbledon
quarterfinals last year. “I don’t know how I found the energy to lift, how I
did it, but I thank the crowd.”

Eighth-seeded Mardy Fish, the highest ranked of the U.S. men, had a 6-4,
6-4, 6-2 win over Gilles Muller to progress along with 2009 U.S. Open champion
Juan Martin del Potro, No. 7 Tomas Berdych, No. 10 Nicolas Almagro, No. 13
Alexandr Dolgopolov, No. 18 Feliciano Lopez, No. 21 Stanislas Wawrinka and No.
30 Kevin Anderson.

No. 25 Juan Monaco, No. 28 Ivan Ljubicic and No. 31 Jurgen Melzer joined
Verdasco as other seeded players to lose.

Jan 16 (Reuters) – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has
told his players to “wake up and be focused” when they host
champions Manchester United next weekend after back-to-back
Premier League defeats.

After a poor start to the season, the north London side had
turned around their form to rise from the lower part of the
table into the top four but Sunday’s 3-2 defeat by promoted
Swansea City and a 2-1 loss at Fulham have stalled the progress.

Arsenal are in fifth place, 12 points behind the two
Manchester clubs who are level on points at the top before
City’s trip to bottom club Wigan Athletic later on Monday (2000
GMT).

“That’s now twice—at Swansea and at Fulham – where we
have given the game away,” Wenger was quoted as saying by the
club’s website (www.arsenal.com).

“At our level that is frustrating and not good enough. It is
down to a lack of composure and the right decision-making.

“It is alarming because at Fulham we were 1-0 up and we lost
the game. (Against Swansea) we came back to 2-2 and straight
away we gave the third goal away. It is really a concern.”

Arsenal have lost seven league matches this season and are
determined not to add to the tally when United visit the
Emirates next Sunday.

“It is a massive opportunity (next Sunday) because you feel
we have given six points away in the last two games in a way
that is unbelievable,” Wenger said.

“It is time for us to wake up and be focused—we have a
good opportunity to do that against Manchester United.”

Arsenal, whose below-par season has coincided with arch
rivals Tottenham Hotspur challenging the Manchester clubs for
the title, have been boosted by the short-term loan signing of
their all-time leading goalscorer Thierry Henry.

The Frenchman, who plays for Major League Soccer outfit New
York Red Bulls, enjoyed a dream return when he came off the
bench to score the winner in their FA Cup third round win over
Leeds United last week but even that has soured a little.

Monday’s British newspapers reported Henry had been involved
in a heated verbal exchange with an Arsenal supporter after the
Swansea defeat when he gestured at the fan and urged him to be
more positive and get behind his team.

LONDON (AP)—Although Wolverhampton Wanderers could trade divisions with
Birmingham at the end of the season, the relegation-threatened Premier League
club will get a chance to put its local rival in its place when the teams meet
in the FA Cup on Wednesday.

The central England sides are set to replay a third-round match at Molineux
after a 0-0 draw on Jan. 7 and Birmingham are the form side.

While Wolves are just a point above the Premier League relegation zone, the
Blues hover just outside the promotion playoff spots in the second-tier League
Championship following a 6-0 win at Millwall at the weekend.

But Wolves showed they can still compete with in-form sides with a 1-1 draw
at third-place Tottenham on Saturday and manager Mick McCarthy is looking for
his team to carry that improved form into Wednesday’s match.

“We have been harder to beat in recent weeks, without a doubt,” McCarthy
said. “We’d been tough and determined as we always are and we were well
organized.

“I didn’t want any more heroic failures.”

The chance for local bragging rights should mean neither side is complacent
about a match that both might understandably place below league fixtures on
their list of priorities, but McCarthy is still set to tinker with his lineup.

Steven Fletcher scored his ninth goal of the season at the weekend but is
likely to be omitted on Wednesday.

“I did (rest Fletcher) last week against Birmingham amid much confusion
about why I wasn’t playing my best player,” McCarthy said. “Well, I want him
to play in the Premier League because it’s paramount we have a player there who
is on a run and is scoring goals.

“I didn’t think having Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Kevin Doyle against
Birmingham was a downer anyway. Rest assured, Fletch will probably be getting a
rest on Wednesday.”

Birmingham and its manager Chris Hughton are trying to get back into the
Premier League and Wolves are fighting to stay there.

“It’s nice to get a point at Arsenal and Spurs but … we can’t rest on our
laurels with two good performances in North London,” McCarthy said. “We need
to do it in the West Midlands as well.”

Local pride will also play a big part in one of Tuesday’s five third-round
replays, with Leicester hosting Nottingham Forest following the East Midlands
rivals’ 0-0 draw.

Tensions already spilled over when 10 people were arrested at the original
Jan. 7 meeting. Most were for public order offenses but police are also
investigating reports of racist chants against fans of Leicester, a city with a
large Asian population.

Both sides are laboring in the League Championship, with Leicester mired in
mid-table and Forest in the relegation zone after a 3-0 defeat against leader
Southampton. Forest has not scored in six home games, so hope a change of venue
will bring a change of luck.

“It’s frustrating as hell not scoring as many goals as we could score with
the opportunities we create,” Forest manager Steve Cotterill said. “It was
like that before I came here and it’s like that now.”

After losing his opening match 1-0 to Newcastle in the Premier League on
Sunday, Mark Hughes aims for his first win as manager of Queens Park Rangers
when the London side hosts third-tier Milton Keynes Dons.

Struggling Millwall hosts Dagenham and Redbridge, Brighton visits Wrexham,
and Premier League struggler Bolton is at home against lowly Macclesfield.

Bolton lost 3-0 to defending Premier League champion Manchester United on
Saturday and is in the topflight relegation zone but manager Owen Coyle is
hoping a game against fourth-tier opposition can provide a morale-boosting win.

“Our younger players are continuing to get better and that will stand us in
good stead for the remainder of the season,” Coyle said. “The courage that was
displayed in the second half when we took the game to Manchester United showed
that we have the belief that we can win games.”

For all the reasons we listed earlier, Malkin’s 5-point game — including a natural hat trick — in the Penguins’ 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning was the performance of the day.

No. 2 Star: Jason Blake, Anaheim Ducks

The Ducks continue their post-”GM says everyone must go!” run with a 4-2 win at the Vancouver Canucks, powered by Blake’s 2 goals and 1 assist. After Bobby Ryan scored in the second period to give the Ducks a 2-1 lead, Blake sniped one past Roberto Luongo on a 2-on-1 and then followed that with a third-period dagger on the power play, the third goal of his injury-plagued season.

No. 3 Star: Tomas Vokoun, Washington Capitals

The veteran netminder continues to find his groove under Coach Dale Hunter, stopping 43 shots in the Caps’ 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. He made 18 saves in the final period to make Dmitry Orlov’s first NHL goal stand as the game-winner.

Honorable mention: Max Pacioretty had two goals and an assist as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers, 4-1. He scored 2:39 into the game and then answered John Mitchell’s goal with his own 3:54 into the second period. He later had the primary helper on David Desharnais’s clincher in the second. Peter Budaj made 28 saves. … Jonathan Toews and Viktor Stalberg had a goal and an assist and Andrew Shaw had the eventual game-winner in the third period as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the San Jose Sharks, 4-3. Joe Pavelski scored his 17th and Tommy Wingels scored his first NHL goal in the loss. Also, Antti Niemi was strong despite giving up four goals, making 36 saves including this awesome one on Patrick Kane. … Shawn Horcoff’s terrific pass on an overtime power play set up Taylor Hall’s game-winner, as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1. Josh Green and Justin Williams had the other goals; Devin Dubnyk made 20 saves in the win. … James Neal had two goals for the Penguins, while Matt Gilroy scored his first as a Bolt. … This Alex Ovechkin hit nearly makes up for his rapping:

James Neal and Pavel Kubina earned misconducts in the Penguins/Bolts game, as did Vincent Lecavalier. … Finally, here are the NBC guys talking about Evgeni Malkin’s incident with Vincent Lecavalier. Amid reports Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have engaged in some nasty fighting since announcing the dissolution of their marriage, the couple played nice yesterday (Jan. 14) in Pasadena, Calif. Promoting ‘Q’Viva: The Chosen,’ the reality show they host and produce together for Univision, the former lovebirds were “anything but tense,” Us Weekly reports.

Anthony, who is now dating model Shannon De Lima, apparently helped Lopez — now seeing dancer Casper Smart — as she took the stage in a blue leather dress. At one point in their press conference, he even tapped her hand.

The singer, actress and ‘American Idol‘ judge also got a little touchy-feely, according to Us, tapping Anthony on the arm and gesturing toward him as they talked. Responding to a question regarding what it was like working with her soon-to-be-ex husband, JLo took the high road.

“Same as it was any other time we worked together,” Lopez told reporters. “We have a great time working together.”

Single Review: Eli Young Band, “Even if It Breaks Your Heart”

While I would prefer that contemporary country artists stop looking to the pop-rock music of the mid-1980s for their primary influences, I can at least credit Eli Young Band’s relative good taste.

Other A-list groups may aspire to the MOR sounds of Air Supply and REO Speedwagon, but Eli Young Band’s “Even if It Breaks Your Heart” tips its hand to the Replacements and Paul Westerberg.

Which is to say that at least they’re trying to sound like a very good band instead of an awful one, so they’ve handily cleared a bar that their peers have set just a few scant inches off the ground.

As a cover of singer-songwriter Will Hoge’s single from a couple of years back, “Even if It Breaks Your Heart” is to-the-note faithful to the original arrangement and to its homage to all of the things the Replacements did well: The electric guitar power-chords are heavy and carry just a hint of distortion, giving the track a sturdy rock wash that can’t entirely mask how much the melody and construction owe to classic pop conventions.

What that has to do with classic country conventions is another matter entirely, but, considering how few singles on country radio at the moment have a memorable melody or show any real regard for how to structure a hook, “Even if It Breaks Your Heart” does get a few important things right.

Lead singer Mike Eli, for his part, sings the song with as much conviction as he can muster. The natural rasp in Hoge’s voice brought a greater sense of gravity to his performance than Eli can pull off, but he makes a game effort to sell the song’s familiar narrative. As yet another testament to dues-paying and big dreams, “Even if It Breaks Your Heart” is fine enough, but “Chasin’ That Neon Rainbow,” it ain’t.

So it’s a matter of good but not great song, given a credible performance by a competent band with the wherewithal not to want to sound like Journey. While that, regrettably enough, might actually make for one of the year’s standout country singles, “Even if It Breaks Your Heart” is undermined by its frankly terrible engineering.

Eli Young Band were on the losing side of the Loudness War in the recording of their track: Precious few guitar chords in the full duration of the performance actually ring to the full breadth of their tone, giving the single a clipped, tinny sound. Just as there’s no excusing the poor taste of so many of today’s country artists, there’s no excuse, given the available technology, for a single to sound as bad as this.

Listen: Even if It Breaks Your Heart

We’ve long been fans of Roy Hibbert’s here at Ball Don’t Lie, and his recent appearances and admitted fandom of “Parks and Recreation” sent that admiration through the roof earlier this year. With every passing game into this lockout-shortened season, though, we’re finding more and more ways to dig what Hibbert is bringing. He should rank amongst the NBA’s most improved players this season, and to hear Hibbert tell it, it’s because he’s acting like less of a “spaz” on the court.

The guy, apparently, is working some soothing mind tricks on the sideline to settle his butt down. From the great Mike Wells at the Indianapolis Star:

At the same time, Hibbert started relaxation exercises to help ease his mind.

That, along with 15 pounds of added muscle, have made Hibbert almost a regular in the double-double department in points and rebounds for the Pacers (7-3) this season. He’s tied for fourth in the league in double-doubles with six.

“I’ve been doing, as crazy as it might sound, a lot of relaxation exercises to try and change my temperament,” Hibbert said. “Sometimes I tend to spaz out on the court. This time I’m letting things go and I’m trying to play more focused.”

The results aren’t flying off the page, but a closer look at the numbers (because we’re total spazzes, ‘ere) reveals a sterling start to Hibbert’s season. Because Roy is only playing two more minutes per game this season, his 1.4-point and 2.4-rebound per-game jumps won’t bowl you over, but every bit helps.

Hibbert is making 54 percent of his looks after failing to make half of his attempts from the floor in his three previous seasons, and his minutes per game should spike once Indiana coach Frank Vogel realizes that he’s fouling far, far fewer times. Hibbert averaged a whopping 7.7 fouls for every 36 minutes he played back in 2008-09, and that’s down to 3.2 per 36 this season. His scoring has shot up despite fewer shot attempts, and he’s also anchoring Indy’s fourth-ranked defense.

He’s also on “Parks and Rec.” Come on, Frank.
