Chicago Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo out for the season with ACL injury

CHICAGO – Chicago Blackhawks forward Dan Carcillo will be out for the rest of the season with an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

The team said Friday that Carcillo is set to have reconstructive surgery on Tuesday and will be out at least six months.

Carcillo was helped off the ice after he launched Edmonton’s Tom Gilbert into the boards during the second period of the Oilers’ 4-3 victory Jan. 2. The 26-year-old Carcillo received a major boarding penalty and a game misconduct for the hit, and was later suspended for seven games.

He had two goals and nine assists to go along with 82 penalty minutes in 28 games this season.

Team physician Dr. Michael Terry anticipates a “full return” for Carcillo.

The Blackhawks also activated forward Marcus Kroger from injured reserve Friday and sent forward Ben Smith to Rockford of the American Hockey League.

No. 1 Star: Saku Koivu, Anaheim Ducks

Koivu scored a minute in and with a minute left (with a game-winner somewhere in there as well, whatever) to record his second career hat trick in the Ducks5-2 win over the Dallas Stars. The first was nearly a decade ago. It came in November of 2002.

No. 2 Star: Viktor Stalberg, Chicago Blackhawks

At the midway point of this game, Todd Richards’ first as the head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets, the score was 1-1. But then both teams remembered who they were, and the Blackhawks took over. Viktor Stalberg scored thrice, including the empty-netter, as the Hawks cruised to a 5-2 win. It was the first hat trick of his NHL career.

No. 3 Star: Jonas Gustavsson, Toronto Maple Leafs

Gustavsson picked up the third shutout of his career, his second in the last 5 days, stopping all 32 shots he faced to blank the Buffalo Sabres in a 2-0 Leafs win. He’s been lights out in 2012, with wins in all four games he’s started. Nikolai Kulemin and Mikhail Grabovski scored the goals, and David Steckel went an absurd 14-for-16 in the faceoff circle. This was the Monster’s best save, by the way:

Honourable mention: Jaroslav Halak was perfect in his homecoming, registering a shutout in the St. Louis Blues2-0 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Of course, with only 19 shots on goal, the Habs clearly still have some warm feelings towards the guy, but Halak earned this shutout, making a big save off a Tomas Plekanec breakaway in the first and desperation glove save on Mathieu “Stan” Darche in the third… Sean Couturier scored the game-winning goal early in the third period as the Philadelphia Flyers got past the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1. Sergei Bobrovsky made 35 saves in the win, and Claude Giroux took 33 of the team’s 69 faceoffs. No wonder you’d want him taking so many after he nearly scored off the first one of the game:

Derek Stepan scored the shootout winner in the New York Rangers2-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes… Mikko Koivu’s shootout winner helped the Minnesota Wild knock off the San Jose Sharks, 5-4. Matt Cullen scored in the game, the 1000th of his career. Cal Clutterbuck had a goal and an assist in the win, and Dan Boyle had 1 and 2 in the loss… Mason Raymond scored the shootout winner in the Vancouver Canucks5-4 win over Tampa Bay Lightning. Martin St. Louis picked up assists on two late, third-period goals to send the game into extra time, and Ryan Malone’s game-tying goal with the net empty was shrewdly directed in with the skate:

… Nathan Horton scored twice and the Bruins posted three unanswered goals in the third period to knock off the Winnipeg Jets, 5-3… The Pittsburgh Penguins’ woes continued as they fell to the Ottawa Senators, 5-1. Milan Michalek scored twice, Colin Greening added 3 assists, and Jason Spezza notched this slick tally:

… John Tavares had a goal and 2 assists and Matt Moulson had 2 goals and 1 assist in the New York Islanders5-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings… Ryan Ellis scored the game-winner and added an assist in the Nashville Predators topped the Colorado Avalanche, 4-1. Martin Erat also had 1 and 1… Jarome Iginla contributed 2 assists and the 501st goal of his career, and Curtis Glencross had a goal and 3 assists as the Calgary Flames routed the New Jersey Devils, 6-3

Did you know? Patrick Marleau’s assist on Dan Boyle’s first-period goal was his 800th career point, and it came 8 years to the day he recorded his 300th. [@SharksStats]

Dishonourable mention: While the Wild and the Canucks won their respective games in shootouts, both led 4-2 in the third period before allowing their opponents to tie things up late… Speaking of third-period collapses, the Jets entered the third period versus the Bruins up 3-2. The lead lasted eight seconds… The Flames scored 6 goals on only 14 shots versus the Devils. I think it goes without saying that New Jersey goaltending is usually a little better.

Flames’ Bourque faces disciplinary hearing today

Flames’ forward Rene Bourque will have a disciplinary hearing with the NHL this morning after delivering an elbow to Capitals’ center Nicklas Backstrom in the third period of Washington’s 3-1 win Tuesday night.

Bourque went to the penalty box for elbowing, while Backstrom stayed in the game for two more shifts. He was unable to finish the game.

Bourque was suspended two games last month for a hit on Brent Seabrook of the Chicago Blackhawks.

Video: Rene Bourque really wanted to elbow Nicklas Backstrom

Two weeks ago, Rene Bourque of the Calgary Flames was suspended two games for a questionable hit on Brent Seatbook of the Chicago Blackhawks; a Shanaban on a check that had a significant amount of gray area.

Slightly less gray area on this hit against Nicklas Backstrom of the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night — an elbow to the head for which Bourque seemed to go out of his way to complete:

Slo-mo:

Bourque was given a two-minute minor for elbowing. Backstrom had one more shift on the power play after the hit, and then was being evaluated by medical staff after the game.

The Flames forward has played with an edge for years. You can argue whether or not he crossed it with Seabrook, but he’s now “in the system” for the Dept. of Player Safety. Hard to imagine, if Backstrom’s injured, they’re not acting on this.

s/t Danny for the clip.

Video: Carcillo shoves Oilers’ Gilbert into boards; likely in trouble

Not to be outdone by Ian Cole, who earned a three-game suspension Sunday for a check that Brendan Shanahan called the “quintessential” open-ice head hit, Chicago Blackhawks’ winger Dan Carcillo has apparently decided to help Shanahan clarify the rules on shoving from behind.

Here’s Carcillo absolutely launching Edmonton Oilers’ defenseman Tom Gilbert into the end boards after a dump-in:

Okay, I am fairly certain that’s against the rules.

Gilbert left the game and did not return, but he wasn’t the only one hurt by this hit. Carcillo left as well, both because he injured himself making the check and because he was tossed (a fitting punishment), earning a 5-minute major and a game misconduct. Then the Oilers scored twice on the powerplay to take the lead. They wound up winning the game, 4-3.

In other words, despite what you see above, it’s not a slam dunk that Gilbert got the worst of the collision.

Carcillo’s probably still not done suffering for it, either. I would be shocked if he doesn’t get the book thrown at him here.

As I’ve said of late, I honestly have no idea what Shanahan’s going to do anymore, but I’m going to predict a big ban for this incident. Not only was there an apparent injury on the play, but Carcillo’s a repeat offender, having been suspended five times in his NHL career.

Worse, he’s a recent repeat offender on Shanahan’s watch. You’ll recall that, back in October, he saw a two-game ban for effectively doing the same thing to Joni Pitkanen.

If the recent Raffi Torres suspension is any indication, Shanahan gets annoyed when his discipline fails to deter, and this is one such case.

In this instance, Carcillo hasn’t just continued to shove from behind — he’s gotten better at it. Heck, he’s perfected the act. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more “quintessential” shove into the end boards than this one. Granted, it’s not right in the numbers,

What say you, puckheads? Is this is a banner Shanaban?

Remind us again why VERSUS doesn’t have this kid between the benches? As if Pierre McGuire would ever have the stones to ask Jonathan Toews who is “da biggest tuwh-key on da team” …

We’d like to see more of this burgeoning friendship between Joey Junior Blackhawks Reporter and Dan Carcillo.
