SAN DIEGO (AP)—Being traded from a Chicago White Sox to his hometown San
Diego Padres couldn’t have been any some-more available for All-Star outfielder
Carlos Quentin.
“I get a call and they pronounced I’ve been traded to San Diego. I’m already
here,” Quentin pronounced on a discussion call shortly after a trade was announced
Saturday.
Four years after trade Quentin from Arizona to a White Sox, new Padres
general manager Josh Byrnes is bringing him home.
Byrnes done his second confidant pierce in dual weeks when he acquired Quentin for
two prospects.
“Trading him is flattering high on my list of regrets,” Byrnes said. “That
group in Arizona had a lot of talent. Carlos always stood out for his intensity
and his character of play. Having a possibility to get him behind became unequivocally appealing
here this offseason.”
The trade is approaching to accelerate San Diego’s offense, that was awful as
the Padres finished final in a NL West during 71-91, 23 games behind the
Diamondbacks. Quentin has 4 uninterrupted 20-homer seasons, including 36 in
2008.
“Improving a offense is a priority this offseason and a merger of
Carlos gives us a proven middle-of-the-order bat,” Byrnes said. “We
specifically targeted Carlos since of his prolongation and his hard-nosed style
of play.”
While Quentin started a final dual seasons in right margin for a White Sox,
he’s penciled into left margin with a Padres.
The White Sox perceived teenager joining pitchers Simon Castro, a right-hander,
and Pedro Hernandez, a left-hander.
“San Diego came behind and apparently put something on a list that
attracted us,” White Sox GM Ken Williams said. “Both of these guys are guys
that we can eventually see, and we can see them unequivocally fast here.”
Castro went 7-8 with a 5.63 ERA in 22 starts between Double-A San Antonio
and Triple-A Tucson final season.
“He will be a initial to acknowledge that final year he did not distinguish
himself among some of his peers that were also deliberate tip prospects during the
time,” Williams said. “We’ve got to get him behind there. Just one year ago you
wouldn’t have been means to get this form of guy.”
Williams pronounced Dayan Viciedo goes into open training as Chicago’s starting
right fielder.
On Dec. 17, Byrnes dealt right-hander Mat Latos to a Cincinnati Reds for
four players, including starter Edinson Volquez and Yonder Alonso, a leading
contender to start during initial base.
The dual moves retreat a new Padres trend of traffic large leaguers for
prospects and shedding salary. Byrnes pronounced a Padres were means to make these
deals since his predecessor, Jed Hoyer, did a good pursuit of appropriation prospects
over a prior dual years before he left to turn GM of a Chicago Cubs.
“Talking to (CEO) Jeff Moorad, if we had ways to widen a payroll, get
the right guys to be rival in 2012, maybe be a warn organisation in 2012, and
with that substructure that gives us a possibility during genuine postulated success for a
number of years, that’s a ideal,” Byrnes said.
While GM of a Diamondbacks, Byrnes traded Quentin to a White Sox for
minor joining initial baseman Chris Carter in Dec 2007. The Diamondbacks had
taken Quentin in a initial turn of a 2003 pledge breeze after he helped
Stanford strech a College World Series 3 true times.
Byrnes pronounced a Diamondbacks had a over-abundance of outfielders in 2007 and moving
Quentin helped build a trade package for Dan Haren, who was performed from
Oakland 11 days after Quentin was traded to Chicago. Carter was one of six
players Arizona sent to Oakland in a Haren deal.
“My genuine bewail is unequivocally how many over time we missed his intensity,”
said Byrnes, who oversaw an NL West pretension in 2007 with Arizona, though was dismissed in
July 2010. “A organisation that had success and now disaster and now success, could
have used his celebrity around a small bit.”
A shoulder damage singular Quentin to usually one diversion in a final month of
2011, though Byrnes pronounced a outfielder is healthy.
The 29-year-old Quentin strike .254 with 24 home runs, a career-high 31 doubles
and 77 RBIs in 118 games in 2011, when he done his second All-Star team.
In 2008, he done his initial All-Star team, won a Silver Slugger endowment and
finished in a tip 5 of AL Most Valuable Player voting.
Quentin has listened a speak about how atmospheric Petco Park cooking adult fly balls,
but isn’t worried.
“I was here when a park was initial built and I’m informed with it. I
played in it. I’m advantageous to have a distance physically and be means to be
successful personally. I’ve always had a proceed of attack initial and staying
within myself. I’ve found that to be many ideal to furnish power. I’m not
planning on changing that during all. I’ll turn informed with a ballpark.”
Byrnes thinks Quentin will be OK.
“He’s got outrageous power, so he has strike a good series of homers to right,
right-center,” a GM said. “It’s a high sequence for any actor in Petco, but
from core to a left-field tainted pole, they’re left in any park. … Since we
play half a games on a road, he’ll be a genuine threat. When we were down two
or 3 runs, we didn’t have adequate of a hazard in a lineup. We feel Carlos
will move that.”
The Padres strike a fewest homers in a majors (91); had a lowest batting
average in a NL (.237); a second-highest strikeout sum in a majors
(1,320); and scored usually 593 runs, second-lowest in a NL final season.
Quentin attended class propagandize in suburban Chula Vista and was a three-sport
standout during University of San Diego High. He was selected San Diego’s Male Athlete
of a Year in 2000.
He was a finalist for a Golden Spikes Award during his final college
season, 2003.
