Spurned by top choice Fisher, Dolphins keep looking for coach

Rejected by Jeff Fisher, the Miami Dolphins plan to interview several more candidates before hiring a coach, owner Stephen Ross said Friday.

Fisher turned down the Dolphins to accept the coaching job in St. Louis, the Rams confirmed Friday. Ross and general manager Jeff Ireland quickly hit the reset button in their search, but the rejection represented a major setback.

Fisher’s decision came 10 days after he interviewed with Miami.

“It lasted a little longer than I would have liked,” Ross said with a chuckle in a phone interview with the Associated Press. “We did everything we thought we could do. We were stretching. We made an offer better. We worked hard at it.”

The Dolphins, unlike the Rams, have a general manager in place, and Fisher may thus end up with more authority over personnel decisions in St. Louis. Ross, however, said he didn’t think that swayed Fisher.

“The organizational structure I don’t believe was an issue at all,” Ross said. “I’ve always thought the relationship between the coach and general manager is a partnership, and we felt Jeff was fine with that.”

A Dolphins source told NFL.com’s Jeff Darlington that Fisher never asked for complete control. The source said he expressed during the interview that he wanted a mutual decision-making process with Ireland, which is what the Dolphins also planned to institute.

Fisher, who coached the Titans franchise for 17 years, was Miami’s first choice and widely considered the top prize on the NFL coaching market. Ross wanted to make a splash by hiring a coach who would reinvigorate the fan base, and Fisher offered the best chance to do that.

Among the other candidates interviewed by the Dolphins, the only one with any NFL head coaching experience is Todd Bowles, thanks to his role as their interim coach for the final three games this season. Bowles has also been linked to the coaching vacancy with the Oakland Raiders.

“Jeff was great — he had the experience that the other ones might not have,” Ross said. “But it has always been my philosophy to hire young people who have a real desire to succeed, and that’s what’s out there. Hopefully there’s a Hall-of-Fame coach we’ll be talking to.”

Other candidates interviewed by Miami have included Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, Cincinnati Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer and Chicago Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub. The search will now be expanded and may include other coaches still in the playoffs.

“We have continued to evaluate candidates even after we spoke with Jeff,” Ross said. “We’re excited about the candidates we’re considering. They’re outstanding in their own right. We’ll continue with our plan, which will include interviewing several candidates more. I’m confident the process will result in the choice of the right coach to lead our team.”

Darlington reported that the team already has an interview lined up for Saturday with an as-yet-unnamed candidate.

Zambrano happy with trade to Marlins (AP)

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP)—Carlos Zambrano is excited about the trade that
sent him from the
Chicago Cubs to the Miami Marlins, expressing confidence that
it will rejuvenate his career.

The hot-tempered pitcher was a three-time All-Star with the Cubs, but he
feuded with teammates, management and umpires. Miami is hoping he will get back
on track while pitching for his Venezuelan countryman, new Marlins manager Ozzie
Guillen.

“This is like a rebirth in my career, and I say so because it is a new
experience, a change that creates a new opportunity,” Zambrano said Thursday in
his first public comments since the deal.

Zambrano was 125-81 with a 3.60 ERA during 11 seasons with the Cubs, a rocky
tenure that ended Aug. 12. He was ejected from a game, cleaned out his locker,
talked about retiring and was suspended without pay.

He was sent to the Marlins last Thursday for fellow right-hander Chris
Volstad
.
Zambrano, due to earn $18 million this season in the final year of his
contract, waived his no-trade clause to accept the deal.

“My time with the Cubs was very successful except for the last two years,”
he said. “But I would say there were 11 years of success and would like to be
remembered well in Chicago. Unfortunately the last two years there was no mutual
understanding on either side and many things happened.”

The 30-year-old Zambrano expressed gratitude to the Marlins for having
confidence in him.

“Going to Miami will be more relaxed, waiting to do my job and together
with my teammates trying to win with this team,” he said.

Johnson’s 24 points lead No. 13 Miami women (AP)

DULUTH, Ga. (AP)—Shenise Johnson scored 24 points, Morgan Stroman added 18
with 10 rebounds and No. 13 Miami beat Georgia Tech 77-65 on Monday night.

The Hurricanes (13-3, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won four of five
and improved to 3-3 on the road this season.

Sasha Goodlett finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds for Georgia Tech
(11-5, 1-2). Chelsea Regins had 16 points and 10 boards.

The Yellow Jackets, who were coming off a three-point loss at No. 5 Maryland
last week, have dropped two straight following a six-game winning streak.

Regins’ three-point play brought Georgia Tech within four at 54-50, but the
Yellow Jackets went 4:29 without a field goal, and Miami took the game’s biggest
lead at 15 on Shanel Williams’ layup at the 7:28 mark.

After Goodlett’s two-footer made it 66-60 with 4:55 remaining, Georgia Tech
never got any closer.

Miami improved to 12-1 when leading at halftime.

Shawnice Wilson’s putback gave Miami its biggest first-half lead, 11 points
at the 5:33 mark, but the Yellow Jackets went on a 17-6 run that ended with
Chelsea Regins’ putback and a 36-36 with 1:21 remaining.

Johnson, who had seven assists, one turnover and six steals, extended her
streak to 87 consecutive games of scoring in double figures, the best in the
nation. Last year’s ACC player of the year and a preseason All-American this
year by The Associated Press, Johnson used a no-look pass to feed Stroman for a
fastbreak layup that made it 58-51 with 10:15 remaining.

The Hurricanes persevered despite going 0 of 10 on 3-point attempts. Johnson
and Riquna Williams combined to go 0 of 7.

Miami, which leads the nation in steals with a 16.1 average, outscored
Georgia Tech 26-19 in points off turnovers.

Tyaunna Marshall added 12 points, nine rebounds, five turnovers and one
assist for the Georgia Tech.

No. 25 North Carolina women beat No. 12 Miami (AP)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)—Sylvia Hatchell spent all Monday night telling her
North Carolina players to keep believing they could win despite yet another key
injury, a bevy of turnovers and the struggle to find any rhythm offensively.

At least her Tar Heels proved they’ll still listen to their coach on a rough
night.

Chay Shegog hit the go-ahead free throws with 1:11 left, helping No. 25
North Carolina rally past No. 12 Miami 65-63 in the Atlantic Coast Conference
opener for both teams.

Shegog finished with 20 points to lead the Tar Heels (11-2, 1-0 ACC), who
won despite finishing with a season-high 31 turnovers. North Carolina trailed by
eight with about 5 1/2 minutes left before fighting back to take its first lead on
Shegog’s free throws. Freshman Brittany Rountree added 14 points for the Tar
Heels, including two free throws with 16.7 seconds left to push UNC’s lead to
four.

The Tar Heels held on from there, surviving a missed layup by Miami’s Riquna
Williams that would’ve tied it with 2 seconds left as well as Morgan Stroman’s
hurried heave that fell way short as the horn sounded.

“About the only thing I can say is they never gave up and they played with
a lot of heart,” Hatchell said. “It wasn’t pretty and we had a lot of
turnovers, but they kept fighting and playing hard.”

It was a victory that’s sure to give the Tar Heels some confidence, not to
mention show Hatchell that she’s got a bunch of fighters despite a rough start.

Williams knocked down 3-pointers on the first two possessions for the
Hurricanes (11-3, 0-1) while the Tar Heels missed a pair of layups on their
first two trips down the floor. An irate Hatchell had seen enough by that point,
calling a timeout 68 seconds in to have an animated discussion with her players
in the huddle.

“I said, `Look, y’all are playing like you’re afraid of them,”’ Hatchell
said. “‘We’re in a battle out here, you know? You’ve got to be aggressive.”’

But things got worse. First North Carolina fell behind by 11 points. Then
senior guard She’la White rolled her left ankle while driving to the basket in
the latest blow to a roster already depleted by injuries. White tried to return
later in the half, but her departure looked crippling when freshmen Rountree and
Shannon Smith were left as the only true ballhandlers against Miami’s pressure—
not to mention when Rountree picked up her fourth foul less than a minute into
the second half.

At times, the Tar Heels were struggling to get the ball across midcourt
against Miami’s fullcourt trap. Smith had nine turnovers and repeatedly heard
frustrated streams both from the UNC sideline or her own teammates.

Yet the Tar Heels played enough defense to hold Miami to 35-percent
shooting, including 6-for-26 from 3-point range. They also took a 41-34
rebounding advantage and finished with a 16-7 edge in second-chance points,
including when the 5-foot-7 Smith somehow managed to grab her own miss and score
to tie the game at 60 with 1:53 left.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes were going in the wrong direction.

“We just didn’t have that fight that we normally have,” said Stroman, who
had 13 points. “It’s like, I guess, we’re depending on everyone to make the big
shots at the end of the game and at that time, we just need to step up and …
play with our chest out and play with confidence. And we weren’t playing like
that.”

Miami led 58-50 on Stefanie Yderstrom’s third 3-pointer with 5:19 left, but
the Hurricanes missed eight of their last 10 shots. The teams were tied on the
boards with about 7 1/2 minutes left before the Tar Heels pushed ahead there late.

Williams finished with 16 points, including a driving layup while drawing a
blocking foul from Smith for a three-point play that brought Miami to within
64-63 with 11.1 seconds left. Yderstrom added 15 points, though preseason ACC
player of the year Shenise Johnson had 11 on 4-for-13 shooting.

That defense helped negate all the turnovers that led to 25 points for Miami
— though the Tar Heels didn’t have a turnover in the final 4 1/2 minutes.

“You’ve got to finish games on the road in the ACC,” Miami coach Katie
Meier said, “and we didn’t.”

Reggie Bush buys Segways for his entire offensive line

At the very least, it appears that foot traffic in one part of the greater Miami area might be a little backed up today. Through his Twitter account, Miami Dolphins running back Reggie Bush announced that he purchased Segway “Personal Transporters” for each member of his offensive line.

It would appear so.

Bush had good reason to be grateful to the guys blocking for him this season — as Miami’s feature back in 2011, he posted his first 1,000-yard season in the NFL (1,086 yards through 15 games) and surprised many observers with his ability to run between the guard and pick up tough yards. In five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, Bush was much more a versatile back and provided more value in the passing game and as a schematic chess piece.  Now, he appears to be much happier as the number-one back in the rotation he always believed he could be. Bush has grabbed 43 receptions in 2011, so he’s kept that side of his game up.

And his new linemen are happier, as well.

The Miami front five currently ranks 16th in Football Outsiders’ Adjusted Line Yards metric and 30th in Power situations, but try telling these guys that when they’re busy vrooming around…

Baylor still No. 1 in AP women’s basketball poll (AP)

Baylor is still the unanimous choice as the No. 1 team in The Associated
Press women’s college basketball poll as the first five teams remained
unchanged.

The Lady Bears received all 40 first-place votes Monday for the fourth
straight week after blowing out McNeese State in its only game. UConn remains
second, with Notre Dame, Stanford and Maryland following.

Kentucky, Tennessee, Duke, Ohio State and Texas AM round out the Top 10.
There was little movement in the poll as most teams had a light schedule for the
holidays.

Miami had the biggest fall, dropping five places to No. 12 after a 25-point
loss at then-No. 17 Georgetown on Wednesday. The Hoyas moved up two spots to
15th.

Scottie Pippen and Chris Bosh are two very different people

b4d4b scottie pippen and chris bosh are two very different people Scottie Pippen and Chris Bosh are two very different peopleIf you think that Scottie Pippen and Chris Bosh have similar takes on life, working as sidemen to the greatest players of their generation, you might want to pull up the dueling Esquire magazine profiles to compare and contrast.

(And, no, this isn’t yet another blog post dedicated to ripping Bosh apart for acting a bit mercurial. We respect the hell out of Chris’ game and what he had to endure last season.)

Still, there’s this from Pippen:

The first NBA game I ever saw in person was the one I played in.

And from Chris:

When I arrived at training camp, ESPN had set up shop and you’d hear, “Reporting live from training camp.” I’m thinking, What are they doing? This is what they do for the Super Bowl, the World Series, the NBA finals. That was the we’re-not-in-Kansas-anymore moment. And it was like that for the whole time.

From Pippen:

Being the youngest of twelve kids and having your underwear handed down teaches you how to share.

Chris?

The moment he said those words, it was like: “Taking my talents” … what? But who cares, he was coming to Miami! We were in Miami, and Miami was on fire. We were all celebrating. It took a little while for me to realize, Ohhh, boy. There are people who did not take kindly to those words.

Pippen:

When I was four or five, I had an older brother who got paralyzed from the neck down in junior high school. Some kid did a wrestling fall on him and hit his spine. We had to take care of him. I went from being the baby to not really being the baby anymore.

Chris:

I’d get on Twitter and see all the nasty things being written. It’s funny what words will do. Even when you know they’re bogus, you still see them. The negative impact is still the same.

Pippen:

That’s how they announced me at the NBA draft. Scott Pippen. What was I going to do, argue with the commissioner?

Chris:

In New York, they started chanting, “Overrated!” Okay, that’s a good one. That’s clever.

Pippen.

Chris.

I wouldn’t have it any other way. Cheers to Esquire for the interviews.
